WSCR RECAP: Christina Gomes Scores Her Team-Leading 5th Goal of the Season, in Gryphons 1-0 Win Over Laurier

GUELPH, Ont. – Gryphons third-year forward, Christina Gomes, continued her impressive 2023 campaign on Sunday afternoon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, with the Gryphons women's soccer team playing host to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. Gomes, a psychology major from Bradford, Ontario, produced the game's lone goal in the 64' minute when she sent a blistering shot from distance into the top corner of the Laurier net. For Gomes, it marked her team-leading 5th goal of the 2023 season and fourth in her last five games, and proved to be the match-winner, with the Gryphons holding on to defeat the visiting Golden Hawks, 1-0. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 6-2-2 (wins-losses-draws) on the season and currently sit in 3rd-place in the nine-team OUA West Division standings. Laurier, meanwhile, falls to 4-4-2 on the season and sit in 5th-place in the division.

The Gryphons sit just 3 points back of 2nd-place McMaster, with just two games remaining on the 2023 OUA regular season schedule. The Gryphons will round out their regular season with a pair of home games against the Algoma Thunderbirds (0-10-0). The Gryphons and Thunderbirds will play Friday night (Oct. 20) under the lights at the Gryphon Soccer Complex (6pm start), followed by a Saturday afternoon meeting in Guelph (1pm start).

The OUA women's soccer playoffs will officially get underway on Wednesday, October 25 with the preliminary round. The top two teams in the OUA West Division will receive a bye through to the quarterfinals on Oct. 28, so the Gryphons will be eager to take all six points from Algoma, while also keeping an eye on McMaster's weekend results (Oct. 20 vs Windsor and Oct. 22 at Western).
