GUELPH, Ont. – Friday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, the Gryphons women's soccer team scored two late goals to salvage a hard-fought draw against the York Lions in a matchup of two of the top teams in the OUA West Division. It was a night characterized by the Gryphons unwillingness to go away, with the hosts twice coming from behind to equalize. After the Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead, Guelph would respond in the 20th
minute when a shot from Gryphons second-year forward,
Christina Gomes, was stopped, it was an easy tap-in for fellow sophomore striker,
Olivia Brown, whose 4th goal of the season tied the match at 1-1.
After the Lions struck twice to take a commanding 3-1 lead, the Gryphons would claw their way back into it in the final stages of the game. In the 88th minute, it was a beautiful shot from
Christina Gomes from outside the 18-yard box that found the top corner and brought the Gryphons within one. For Gomes, it marked her 3rd goal of the season. The Gryphons would then complete a memorable comeback, with
Sami Falkenstein scoring in the 3rd minute of stoppage time to bring the match level at 3-3. Falkenstein's 2nd goal in as many games would prove to be one of the final kicks of the game, as the Gryphons and Lions shared the points after splitting six goals in a Friday night thriller at U of G.
With the result, the Gryphons now sit at 4-1-1 (wins-losses-draws) on the season and remain 2 points ahead of York, who now sit at 3-0-2. The two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon in Toronto, with kickoff set for 1pm.
