The Gryphon football team officially began their 2022 training camp earlier this week, with Saturday, August 13 marking the first day of on-field team practices across the conference. After having adopted a shortened, six-game format a year ago, the OUA will be returning to a full, eight-game regular season schedule this year. The Gryphons will hit the road to open up their 2022 regular season campaign, with the Gryphons set to travel west down the 401 to London for a Week 1 matchup versus the defending Vanier Cup champion Western Mustangs on Saturday, August 27. Gryphon football 2022 training campThe Gryphons will then return home to Alumni Stadium on Labour Day Monday (Sept. 5) when they host the Windsor Lancers in Week 2. But first, the Gryphons will have an opportunity to test themselves against the York Lions in preseason action.

"It has been really uplifting to be back in the swing of things and able to gel as a group during meetings, meals, practices and workouts," says head coach Ryan Sheahan, who enters his fourth season in charge of the Gryphon football program. With the 2020 campaign cancelled due to COVID, the 2022 season will mark Coach Sheahan's third season in charge of on-field action for the Gryphon football team. In his two season of on-field competition at U of G (2019 & 2021), Sheahan has led the Gryphons to back-to-back playoff appearances, while producing seven U SPORTS All-Canadians and 16 OUA All-Stars. "The guys have been buzzing around so far in camp. This Saturday's game versus York will provide us with an opportunity to work on implementing our systems, while also evaluating our state of readiness for the season. We are excited to see where our student-athletes are at when it comes to being able to compete and produce at the U SPORTS level."

The last time the Gryphons and Lions faced each other on the grid iron was during Week 3 of the 2019 season, when the Gryphons earned a convincing 53-19 victory. Although this Saturday's exhibition game will not be broadcast, all eight of the Gryphons regular season games in 2022 will once again be streamed live online, free of charge, at OUA.tv.

Tickets for all four of the Gryphons 2022 regular season home games are now available online at gryphons.ca/tickets, with Guelph playing host to Windsor (Sept. 5), Queen's (Sept. 24 – Homecoming), McMaster (Oct. 7) and Carleton (Oct. 22). The 2022 U SPORTS football season will culminate on November 26 in London, with Western University serving as hosts of the 57th Vanier Cup. The Gryphons have been crowned national champions once in program history (1984) while capturing the Yates Cup as Ontario champions on four separate occasions (2015, 1996, 1992 & 1984).
