WHKY RECAP: The Gryphons Fall to the Lakers 2-0 in Final Game Before the Winter Break

GUELPH, Ont. – In their final game of 2022 the Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team fell to the Nipissing Lakers 2-0 at the Gryphon Centre on Saturday afternoon. The Gryphons will head into the winter break with a 7-3-4 record and in second place in the OUA's West Division.

The Gryphons came into Saturday's game looking to close out the 2022 regular season schedule with back-to-back home wins after defeating the Western Mustangs 3-2 on Thursday night. The period saw both teams have opportunities on the power play and at four-on-four but neither team able to find the back of the net. 0In the second period the Gryphons would send the visiting Lakers to the power play just 22 seconds into the frame. 30 seconds into the penalty Maria Dominico would beat Gryphon goaltedner Martina Fedel for the game's first goal. Back to even strength, the Lakers would use the momentum found after the opening score to extend their lead to 2-0 just 15 seconds later. The Gryphons would have four chances with an extra skater in the second to try and cut the Laker lead but a strong Nipissing penalty killing unit would hold the Gryphons scoreless with 20 minutes remaining. After coming up empty an early power play the Gryphons would have their best opportunity of the night as a major penalty would give them five minutes with an extra skater. Meaghan Chittick would come agonizingly close to getting the Gryphons on the board with a point shot that would ring off the post and out. After having one more chance on the powerplay the final whistle would sound and the Nipsssing Lakers would take the game 2-0.

Following the winter break the Gryphons will return to the ice on January 6th when they will host the Western Mustangs at the Gryphon Centre with puck drop set for 1:30pm.
