MHKY RECAP: Gryphon Defeat the Western Mustangs 3-2 for Back-to-Back Wins

GUELPH, Ont. – For the second night in a row the Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team heads off the rink with a win. The Gryphons defeated the rival Western Mustangs 3-2 on Saturday night (Nov. 19) at the Gryphon Centre Arena.

The Gryphons entered Saturday coming off of a 3-2 shootout win over the Waterloo Warriors on Friday night that saw the two teams combine for 22 penalties. While their game against the Mustangs did not see that number it did see it's fair share of opportunities on the power play for both teams.Ted McGeen vs Western 2022

The first period opened with great chances for both teams, with the Mustangs getting the first crack at a power play goal. The Gryphons penalty kill unit would come out on top and help the Gryphon squad gain some momentum. With 2:36 remaining in the opening frame Jacob Winterton would steal the puck from a Mustang defender and find Anthony Tabak who breaks the stalemate after he beats Dylan Myskiw blocker-side. The Gryphon lead would not last long with Reed Morison tying the game just 58 seconds later. 19 seconds after the Mustang goal the Gryphons would head to the powerplay to close out the opening period. Just 27 seconds into the power play Ted McGeen would take a loose puck across the crease and beat the Mustang goaltender five-hole with a beautiful, backhanded shot.

The second period would see the most power play chances but would also come to a close being the lowest scoring frame of the game. Each team would spend 6 minutes with the man advantage but neither being able to find the back of the net. Gryphon goaltender Tanner Wickware would stop six shots in the second period and 26 in total to post a 0.929 save percentage. The second period would end with the Mustangs leaving 1:26 of a power play on the clock, a power play that would lead to a game-tying goal just 26 seconds into the third. After more back-and-forth from the two teams Cameron Searles would find a rebound from a Ashton Reesor point shot to give the Gryphons the go-ahead, and ultimately game-winning, goal.

The Gryphons (4-3-3) are home again for their next game on Thursday night (Nov. 24) when the U of T Varsity Blues are in town. Fans that cannot make the game can view it live online at www.oua.tv.
