GUELPH, Ont. – On Saturday afternoon (Nov. 19) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre the Gryphon women's basketball team extended their perfect start to the 2022-23 season with a 82-72 win over the York Lions. The Gryphons earned another hard-fought victory in their game against the Lions, narrowly edging out the visiting team in the opening two quarters before taking control in the final frame to solidify their win.
The Gryphons came out on a mission in the first quarter, jumping out to a 20-7 in just over five minutes of action. The Lions would respond with a 9-0 run to close out the quarter and give the Gryphons a narrow 4-point leading heading into the second.

The second frame saw the Gryphons once again led by standout guard
MacKeely Shantz, who scored 8 of her game-high 27 points in the quarter. While the Gryphons never trailed in the second quarter, they did feel the York pressure with the Lions cutting their lead to just three points at one stage. They would eventually head into the locker room at the half with an 8-point lead after outscoring the Lions by 4 for the second period in a row.
The third quarter would see both teams turn the ball over and play their best defence of the game, with the Gryphons being outscored 18-14. Guelph's defence in the third frame and the game was led by 5-foot-11 guard and Niagara Falls native
Julia Colavecchia, who finished the game with 5 steals and 2 blocks to go along with her 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists. Also showcasing their defensive skill was third-year guard
Renee Armstrong who stole the ball 4 times and blocked it once in addition to 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. In the final frame the Gryphons took control, outscoring the visiting Lions 21-15 to close the game out with a 10-point victory.
The Gryphons (5-0) will head on the road next to take on the Algoma Thunderbirds in a double header next Friday (Nov. 25) and Saturday (Nov. 26) in Sault Ste. Marie. Friday tip-off is set for 6pm with Saturday's match starting at 2pm. Both games can be watched live online, at
