WSCR RECAP: Gryphons fall to the York Lions 5-3 in Penalties in the OUA quartefinals

TORONTO, Ont. – On Saturday (Oct. 29) afternoon in Toronto at York University's Alumni Field, the Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team's 2022 season came to an end at the hands of the York Lions. It was a heartbreaker for the Gryphons, as after 120 minutes of game action the Gryphons would fall in penalty kicks 5-3. The Gryphons entered Saturday's matchup coming off a preliminary round win over the Windsor Lancers that saw the team score twice in extra time to advance to the quarterfinal round 2-1.

As the No. 3-seed in the OUA West Division, the Gryphons travelled to Toronto to take on the No. 2-seeded Lions in the OUA quarterfinals. It was the York Lions who would come out of the gate on a hot start, scoring their two goals less than 5 minutes apart at the 25:58 and 29:52 mark in the first half.Tessa Ladhani vs York (OUA 1/4) 2022 It was late in the second half with time on the Gryphons 2022 season running down that they launched their comeback attempt. With just over 7 minutes remaining in regulation, Anna Lisa Bernardi pick the corner on a beautiful free kick from just outside the 18-yard box to pull the Gryphons to within one. Seven minutes later, Olivia Brown would once again play hero for the Gryphons, beating the Lions goalkeeper with a header off an Anna Lisa Bernardi corner kick to tie the game at 2-2.

After 90 minutes of regulation the Lions and Gryphons would head to two 15 minutes halves in the hopes of advancing to the semi-finals. The Gryphons would stop a couple of strong York scoring chances in the second half of extra time to send the game into penalty kicks. After 5 rounds of penalties the Lions would score on all 5 attempts with the Gryphons only netting 3. The playoff defeat caps off an impressive 2022 campaign for the Gryphons, who finished the regular season with a 6-2-4 record, to go along with one win and one loss in the postseason. The Lions will now move on to the OUA semifinals where they will meet the top-seed in the OUA West Division, the Western Mustangs. The other semi-final game will feature the Ottawa Gee-Gees and the winner of Nipissing-Queen's.
