HAMILTON, Ont. – The defending OUA champion Guelph Gryphons men's soccer team's 2022 season came to a close on Saturday (Oct. 29) afternoon at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton when they were defeated by the McMaster Marauders 2-1 in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 OUA Playoffs. The loss comes following an amazing win for the Gryphons over the Brock badgers in penalty kick Wednesday night in Guelph.
The gryphons entered Saturday's matchup as the OUA West Division's 3
rd seeded team with McMaster being the 2
nd seeded team. In their previous two matchups with the Marauders the Gryphons tied 1-1 at home and won 2-0 in Hamilton back in early September.

Similar to those games this one was a tightly contested match. It was not until 40 minutes into the first half when the 0-0 stalemate was ended with a McMaster goal from Amir Shirazi. It would be 12 minutes into the second half when Shirazi would score his second of the game to put the Gryphons behind 2-0. In the 62
nd minute the Gryphon would strike back with
Colin Gander converting a penalty kick to cut the Marauder lead in half. The Gryphons would battle to find the equalizer, but the defending champions would come up short in their quest to go back-to-back.
The playoff defeat comes at the end of an incredible 2022 season that saw the Gryphons go through the regular season with only one loss and finishing with a 6-1-5 regular season record.
The Marauders will now move on to the OUA semi-final round and take on the Waterloo Warriors following their upset of the U SPORTS No. 1-ranked York Lions.
