MHKY RECAP: Gryphons fall 7-3 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Thursday in Guelph

GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons men's hockey team returned to the ice at Gryphon centre Arena for the second of their back-to-back games this week. They faced off against the Lakehead Thunderwolves in another battle of top teams in the OUA West Conference, falling 7-3 in tough loss.

In the first period the Thunderwolves wasted no time, scoring just over four minutes into the game with Griffin Fox beating Gryphon goaltender Brendan Cregan. Two minutes late Keighan Gerrie would net another for Lakehead, giving them a 2-0 lead early in the first. Luke Kutkevicius vs Lakehead 2022The Gryphons would find their legs following the two quick goals, forcing two penalties in the remaining first period time. The Gryphs would go into the first intermission empty handed despite out shooting the Thunderwolves 14-6 in the first frame. The Gryphons would finish the game with 42 shots on net to Lakehead's 31.

The second period would prove to be one the Gryphons would like to forget, finding themselves on the wrong end of back-to-back power play goals within two minutes of each other. The power goals came after the Thunderwolves stretched their lead to 3-0 midway through the second frame. Following the third Lakehead goal the Gryphons would make a change in net, sending Colton Incze into the Gryphon crease. Prior to the end of the second Spencer Blackwell would score short-handed to send the teams into the locker room with the Thunderwolves leading 6-0.

In the third period it would finally be Guelph's turn to do some scoring, with Luke Bignell finding a loose rebound and beating the Lakehead goaltender blocker side. Just 49 seconds later Nolan DeGurse would beat two Thunderwolves across the crease and send a backhanded shot past the glove of Christian Cicigoi. A Lakehead penalty would send the Gryphons to the power play where Bignell would score his second of the game off another rebound that crept its way past the Lakehead goalie and onto Bignell's stick waiting next to the net. That would prove to be the Gryphs offence for the night, with the Thunderwolves finding an empty net to all but seal the victory.

The Gryphons will look to bounce back on Friday, November 4th when they take on the Windsor Lancers on home ice at the Gryphon Centre Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm.
