GUELPH, Ont. – On a clear fall afternoon at Alumni Stadium the Gryphons 2022 football season came to a close, as they fell to the U SPORTS No. 10-ranked Carleton Ravens 35-24. The Gryphons out-gained the Ravens 416 to 363 in total yards but ran out of time trying to overcome the early deficit they found themselves in. With the loss, the Gryphons finish the season with a 1-7 record, while the Ravens (5-3) will head to the 2022 OUA playoffs next week.

The first quarter saw a tightly contest game with neither team's defence willing to give up an inch until Gryphon defensive lineman
Kristian Stewart blocked a Carleton punt and recovered the ball on the Ravens 14-yard line to set up an
Eric Stranz field goal. The Gryphons would find themselves leading 3-0 heading into the second frame before the Ravens offence would take control. The Ravens would open the second quarter with a 60-yard drive ending in a 1-yard touchdown run from backup quarterback Tristan Rinaldis. With 3:45 remaining in the first half the one of the OUA's most productive quarterback-receiver duos would connect in the endzone with Tanner DeJong finding Kaseem Ferdinand for a 7-yard score. The Gryphons would finally find the endzone with just :04 seconds remaining before halftime, when a 7-play, 46-yard drive was capped off by Gryphons rookie quarterback,
Jake Helfrich, throwing a 3-yard shovel pass touchdown to rookie receiver
Zachary Powell. The ensuing 2-point convert was good after Helfrich connected with
Vyshonne Janusas, and the Gryphons went into the locker room with some momentum, trailing by one score, with Carleton up 18-11. Helfrich would finish the day with 157 passings yards and a touchdown on 15-of-33 passing.

The third quarter would see the Ravens extend their lead to 32-14 after the DeJong-Ferdinand duo would connect again in the endzone along with a 2-yard touchdown run with :38 seconds remaining in the frame. The final quarter of the Gryphons season would see them battle back in a comeback attempt that started with
Eric Stranz's third field goal of the game. Stranz's field goal was set up by one of the most exciting plays of the Gryphons 2022 season which saw receiver
Vyshonne Janusas find fellow pass catcher
Daniel Brown open on a 32-yard pass downfield in a double reverse trick play. With :08 seconds remaining the Gryphons would close their season out with a 3-yard touchdown from 4th-year running back,
Kwame Osei. On the ground the Gryphons were led by 2nd-year running back
Sito Berrio who had 50 rushing yards on 11 carries. In addition to
Jake Helfrich, Lloydminster, Saskatchewan native
Tommy Yanchuk also took snaps at quarterback for the Gryphons going 9-for-12 for 135 yards. Leading the Gryphon receiving corps was
Vyshonne Janusas who hauled in 5 passes for 82 yards. Saturday's game also marked the team's annual "Think Pink" game in support of breast cancer awareness, and was also the Gryphons annual 'Senior Day' celebration, with a total of 11 graduating players honoured prior to kickoff.
