WLAX RECAP: Gryphons Drop Close Contest Versus Western in Opening Game at OUA's

TORONTO, Ont. - In what was the closest contest so far during the opening day of the 2022 OUA women's lacrosse championship, the Western Mustangs used a second half surge to pull away from the Guelph Gryphons. Thanks to a four-point performance from Quinn Kolwich, the Mustangs were able to open up their championship run with a 6-2 victory. Throughout much of the game, there was very little separating the two sides. After Western opened the scoring midway through the first quarter on a goal from Timmia Bomberry, the Gryphons were able to respond a little over five minutes later when Jillian Jacques found the back of the net. Tied at one goal each through 15 minutes of play, the Gryphons were able to take their first lead of contest in the latter stages of the half as Kirsten Sutter put Guelph up 2-1. Sutter's goal would be the only goal of the quarter giving the Gryphons a slim lead at the break. Although trailing, the Mustangs made the most of the thirty minutes remaining. Getting two quick goals to start the third, one from Kolwich and the other from Jamie Atkinson, Western all of a sudden went from trailing by one to leading by one. Up 3-2 after three, the Mustangs would go on to put the game away with three goals in the final quarter. Kolwich would score her second of the game, followed by goals from Melissa Green and Lexie Delisle. Now 1-0, Western will turn their attention towards Saturday when they take on the Brock Badgers at 3:15 p.m. The Gryphons (0-1), meanwhile, will also prepare for a date with the Badgers, as they will square off with Brock at 10:00 a.m. Saturday.
