MSCR RECAP: 2nd-Half Goals Lead Gryphs Past Warriors

GUELPH, Ont. – After suffering a 90th minute equalizer just two nights ago snuffing out an two extra points, the No. 5 nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons made sure they were in no position to have that happen again on Friday. Coming off of a 2-2 road draw Wednesday night against the Waterloo Warriors, the Gryphons hosted the Warriors Friday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex and rolled to a 2-0 victory.

Using a pair of second half goals, the Gryphons recorded their fourth win in their first six matches of 2021, while also extending their unbeaten streak to six games as well.

Throughout the first 45-minutes of the contest, both sides did their best to create opportunities. For the Gryphons they were able to generate four shots, but had nothing to show for it on the score sheet. In the second half though, Guelph would generate another four shots, and this time they were able to take advantage, not once but twice.

It was in the 64th minute when the scoreless deadlock was broken. Getting the Gryphons on the board, Jack Sears tallied the first goal of the contest with Jack Pensom recording the assist. Once Guelph scored the go-ahead goal, they were able to create even more opportunities, and take advantage of Waterloo needing to press for the equalizer.

Only eight minutes after their first marker, Guelph doubled their lead. Scoring his third goal of the season, local product Gray Yates found the back of the net in the 72nd minute to give Guelph plenty of breathing room. Drawing an assist on the Yates' goal was Evan Dick.

Despite allowing four shot attempts, the Gryphons did not surrender a single shot on goal from the Warriors, meaning it was simple shut-out for Gryph's goalkeeper Svyatoslav Artemenko. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native now has four clean sheets already in six matches.

The Gryphons will now have two weeks off before resuming their OUA schedule. Next up for Guelph will be the Brock Badgers on October 22nd from the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
