MRGBY: Gryphons Win 43-21 Over Badgers

GUELPH, Ont. – With the 2021 OUA men's rugby season reduced to just a four-game schedule, there is little room for error. So far, so good for the Gryphons.

On Saturday (Oct. 2) at Varsity Field, the Gryphons men's rugby team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 43-21 victory over the Brock Badgers. The Badgers were able to hang with the Gryphons for the first half of the match. But with Guelph leading 19-14 midway through the game, the home team would end the game on a 24-7 scoring run to dash any hopes of a Brock upset. Gryphons MRGBY vs BrockSeven different players scored tries for the Gryphons, who pick up their second win of the season following a dominating win over the Waterloo Warriors back on Sept. 25 in their home opener.

"I thought we showed a lot of grit and determination against a very tough Brock team," said Gryphons head coach, Cory Hector. "While we weren't perfect, we created a number of opportunities and showed glimpses of our potential. I thought our subs added a lot when they came on, they increased the pace and helped secure the victory."

The Gryphons will now hit the road for each of their last two OUA regular season games. First up, a trip to London on Friday, October 8 to face the Mustangs, followed by a short bus ride to Waterloo for an October 16 matchup versus Laurier. The next time the Gryphons could be playing on Varsity Field could be in an OUA semi-final game, with this year's postseason consisting of OUA semi-final matchups on Oct. 30, followed by the OUA gold medal game on November 6.
