Gryphons launch new Manulife and TD Insurance Directors Fundraising Challenge to support student-athletes during COVID-19

(July 13, 2020) Guelph, Ont. - The University of Guelph Department of Athletics, along with longtime partners Manulife and TD Insurance, has launched a new fundraising challenge aimed at supporting Gryphon student-athletes this upcoming year.

The one-week long fundraising challenge will encourage people to give to the Athletics Scholarship Fund. The 'Manulife and TD Insurance Director's Fundraising Challenge – Give to Gryphons' will begin Monday, July 20th and conclude Thursday, July 23rd, with a one-hour virtual finale event, presented by Swish on July 23rd at 7 p.m.

"Now more than ever, we need to offer our student-athletes as much financial relief as possible. With the loss of summer jobs and part-time work, University-age students have been one of the groups hardest hit by the pandemic," said Director of Athletics, Scott McRoberts.

"Our goal is to enable our student-athletes the assistance to focus on their well-being and excelling when it's time to return to their sport."

Last year over 150 Student-Athletes at the University of Guelph benefited from scholarship support of over $500,000.

Health concerns surrounding COVID-19 led the Department to make the difficult decision to cancel this year's President's Golf Tournament, an event that typically funds over 20 athletic-scholarships. This cancellation, along with other financial challenges created by COVID-19, has created a $100,000 shortfall in the Scholarship support.

The exciting new fundraising challenge will culminate in a finale event presented by Swish Maintenance. This telethon style show will feature live music, athletes, coaches, alumni, and donors talking about the importance of supporting our dedicated Gyphon student-athletes.

Gryphon Athletics is committed to continuing to provide our student-athletes with scholarship support during this challenging time and will direct 100% of the proceeds of this weeklong challenge to assist them.
