to support Special Olympic athletes and families in our community. This organization does incredible work to help promote inclusivity, compassion and promote health and fitness."

On January 19th the Gryphons hosted their first-ever special Olympics day. It was the 20th anniversary of the special Olympics basketball program in Guelph and the 50th anniversary of special Olympics worldwide.

The special Olympics Guelph basketball program started with 13 athletes and three coaches over 20 years ago. And today the program has grown to 60 athletes, 30 volunteer coaches and five teams. A few Guelph athletes recently had the pleasure of competing in the World Games in Abu, Dhabi.

"This growth and success would not have been possible without the help and support of volunteers and organizations like the Department of Athletics," said Steve Redmond, Special Olympics basketball program coordinator and coach. "For the past ten years Gryphon Athletics has been an awesome supporter of Special Olympics. Partnering with the Jr. Gryphon program now aligns us with the other youth sports in our city."

Special Olympics and the Gryphons have worked together on hosting regional basketball tournaments, school unified sporting events, motionball marathon of sports, and the 2016 Provincial Games.
