GUELPH, Ont. – Alexander Chaves (men's wrestling) and Zoe Sherar (women's track and field) have been named Gryphon Muscle MLK Athletes of the Week for the period ending Feb. 23, 2020.
Alexander Chaves (Men's Wrestling)
Competing for the final time as a Gryphon,
Alexander Chaves defended his title as national champion in the men's 72kg weight class by taking home a gold medal at nationals for a second year in a row.

The Guelph native defeated Alberta's Aidan McKeage in the finals, capping a memorable week in St. Catharines for the landscape architecture major, who gave up just two points the entire tournament. Chaves finishes his Gryphon career as both an OUA and U SPORTS gold medalist and leaves the 2020 U SPORTS Wrestling Championships having won each of his matches by technical superiority. Over the course of this year's OUA and U SPORTS Wrestling Championships, Chaves outscored his opponents by a combined score of 76-2.
Zoe Sherar (Women's Track and Field)
Zoe Sherar is putting together a season to remember. Now in her third year at the University of Guelph, where she majors in economics and geographic information systems, Sherar took home three gold medals on the weekend at the 2020 OUA Track and Field Championships in Toronto.
The Toronto native, who earlier this year was named to the prestigious list of
U SPORTS Top 8 Academic All-Canadians, played a key role on the weekend in helping the Gryphon women capture the team title at the OUA Track and Field Championships.

Zoe set a new school-record in the women's 300m, earning gold with a time of 37.71. Zoe also helped a pair of Gryphon relay teams capture gold, with the U of G women's 4x400m relay team (Zoe Sherar, Morgan Byng, Jenna Smith & Sadie-Jane Hickson) breaking an OUA record which had stood since 2013, with a time of 3:41.86. In the women's 4x200m relay, Zoe teamed with Morgan Byng, Shyvonne Roxborough and Tessa Hamilton, establishing a new Canadian national record with a time of 1:36.10. The triple-gold performance by Sherar at the OUA Track and Field Championships helped the Gryphons women's team roll to a 90-point victory in the final team standings, giving Guelph their fifth straight OUA title.
