GUELPH, Ont. - After suffering their first loss of the season on Sunday, the Guelph Gryphons Men's soccer team made sure it was not going to become a streak. Finding the back of the net early and often, the Gryphons rolled to a 6-0 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds Saturday afternoon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Just 16 minutes into the match, the Gryphons got themselves on the board. Third-year forward Peter Zehdee made no mistake from inside the box to put Guelph up 1-0.
After the opening marker, Guelph continued to pour on the pressure. In the 18th minute, Midfielder Evan Dick headed home a ball from Alexander Zis quickly doubling the home-teams advantage. With halftime quickly approaching, it looked as if the score was going to remain the same but the Gryphons had a better idea. A goal in the 45th minute from Alex Zis, and then a pair of goals in first half stoppage time, as Evan Dick and Alex Zis both tallied their second goal of the contest respectively to put Guelph up 5-0 at the break. In the second half, Mitch Lefebvre scored the lone goal to round out the Gryphons 6-0 victory. Lefebvre's goal came in the 79 minute. Guelph outshot the Thunderbirds in the match 21-0, with 16 of those shots on target.
Now with a 4-1-2 record this season, the Gryphons hold sole possession of 2nd place in the West with 14 points, two points back of first place York. Next up for Guelph will be a home date with the Laurier Golden Hawks Friday night. The match is scheduled for 8:15pm from the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
Quote from Gryphon head coach Keith Mason:
"We stayed patient, we kept playing. We knew they were just going to defend in numbers. We talked about being patient, keep the ball and take our opportunities as we can, and we did that well."
