Four Gryphon Football Players Invited to Attend 2019 East-West Bowl

Kian-Schaffer-Baker, Dotun Aketepe, Carter Wilson & Coulter Woodmansey will head to Ottawa for 2019 East-West Bowl

OTTAWA, Ont. – Four Gryphons will head to Ottawa to showcase their skills in front of CFL scouts at the 17th edition of the East-West Bowl. The annual prospects game features 86 players from across the country who are eligible for the 2020 CFL Draft. Gryphon receiver Kian Schaffer-Baker, free safety Dotun Aketepe, defensive end Carter Wilson and offensive linemen Coulter Woodmansey will all be representing the University of Guelph on Team West, while showcasing their skills in front of pro scouts and competing alongside some of the very best players in Canadian university football. The week-long festivities culminate with the playing of the 17th East-West Bowl Game, which is set to kick off on Saturday, May 11 at 12:30pm. The host stadium for the week will be MNP Park in Ottawa, home of the Carleton Ravens, who are hosting the event for the first time. The game will feature a sideline rematch of the last two Vanier Cup games, as Glen Constantin of Laval and Greg Marshall of Western will be behind the two benches.

"Well it's amazing being the head coach of these young men now, because I can remember each of them from when they were in their recruiting class four years ago," says Gryphon head coach Ryan Sheahan. "Dotun, Coulter, Kian and Carter are four outstanding players who have definitely earned the recognition they're getting and I believe they all will show very well."

A year ago, the Gryphons sent three players to the East West Bowl. Two of those three players were selected on Thursday night (May 2) in the 2019 CFL Draft with Eric Starczala and Job Reinhart going to the Toronto Argonauts and Calgary Stampeders, respectively. For Gryphons head coach Ryan Sheahan, the quartet of Gryphon football players heading to the 2019 East-West Bowl also have the potential to continue playing football beyond the university ranks, "Coulter (Woodmansey) has the measurables of a pro offensive linemen. Carter (Wilson) is one of the best edge rushers in the province. Dotun (Aketepe) is a premiere secondary player. And Kian (Schaffer-Baker) has an NFL body for a receiver," adds Sheahan. "I'm hoping these guys can  go to Ottawa and take their first step towards having a great pro career, but they also need to come back and have sensational senior years here at Guelph in order for their stock to continue to increase, and I believe that they'll do just that."

The Gryphons will also be represented on the coaching staff at the 2019 East-West Bowl, with Mark Surya named offensive coordinator of Team West. This marks the second time in Surya's coaching career that he has served as offensive coordinator at the East-West Bowl after also doing so in 2016. Surya joined the Gryphon coaching staff earlier this spring after having spent time at both the University of Toronto as well as Wilfrid Laurier University.

The 2019 East-West Bowl will officially get underway on Tuesday, May 7 with testing/combine drills in the morning followed by practices in the afternoon.
