General

"Gryphie" Moment of the Year

Celebrating those special moments that occur throughout the course of a season that become etched in our memories and part of Gryphon legend. Moments that resonate throughout the playing field and beyond, define seasons and careers. Moments that will never be forgotten.

2022-23: "Half-Court, Hail Mary" (Rasheed Weekes, Men's Basketball)

On Wednesday, February 15, 2023 – the Guelph Gryphons men's basketball team found themselves trailing 88-87 with 1.8 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter against the Western Mustangs…

Playing in the final home game of his Gryphon career, fifth-year forward Rasheed Weekes sent the home crowd into a frenzy with his unforgettable half-court, Hail Mary.

2021-22: "Striking Gold" (Men's Soccer)

After having earned the right to HOST the OUA gold medal match thanks to a dramatic win over Carleton in the semi-finals (the first time since 1990), the OUA men's soccer championship final would be played at the University of Guelph! But the Gryphons weren't content with just hosting. They were looking to strike gold.

In what was the biggest men's soccer game on U of G campus in 31 years (1,160 fans), the Gryphons did just that and beat the No. 2-nationally ranked York Lions 3-2 to claim the program's third OUA title in school history.

2019-20: "OT for the Ages" (Men's Hockey)

Winning the Queen's Cup is the goal for every player in OUA men's hockey. But doing so in triple overtime in front of a sold out home crowd is the type of things dreams are made of.

Second-year forward Ted Nichol scored 1:14 into the third overtime period on Saturday, March 7, 2020 to dramatically lift the Gryphons to a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the 109th edition of the Queen's Cup. Nichol put an end to one of the most memorable hockey games ever played on U of G campus by taking a pass from linemate Ryan Valentini before firing a shot low, blocker side past Gee-Gees goalie Domenic Graham to send the Gryphon faithful into a frenzy.

The game was played in front of a capacity crowd of 1,600 fans at the Gryphon Centre, with the triple overtime thriller marking the 7th OUA title in U of G history (and first since 2014-15), and the longest edition of the Queen's Cup in OUA history.

2018-19: "Hockey History" (Women's Hockey)

On Sunday, March 17, 2019, the Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team made history by becoming the first women's hockey team in University of Guelph history to be crowned national champions.

Fifth-year captain Kaitlin Lowy scored the game-winning goal in the gold medal game versus McGill, lifting Guelph to a 1-0 win at the U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championships in P.E.I.

It also marked the first time ever that the Gryphons had reached the podium at the national level, with the 2018-19 season marking the team's 6th trip to the national championship tournament in program history.

2017-18: "Hinch-lifts Gryphs to Victory" (Women's Soccer)

In 2017-18, the Gryphons were crowned OUA champions in women's soccer for the first time in program history.

Second-year forward Victoria Hinchliffe converted from the penalty spot in both the OUA semi-finals as well as the OUA gold medal match to help lift the Gryphons past UOIT and Western en route to the first OUA women's soccer banner in U of G history.

2016-17: "Perrin Caps Perfection" (Men's Rugby)

For the first time since 1998, the Gryphons were crowned OUA champions in men's rugby thanks to a dramatic win over the Queen's Gaels in the OUA gold medal match.

It took three extra halves and two rounds of penalty kicks, but the Gryphons eventually edged the Gaels in thrilling fashion to avenge a heartbreaking loss from the previous season.

Fourth-year fly half Mark Perrin provided the heroics, coming through not once but twice during the decisive penalty kick rounds to help the Gryphons hoist the Turner Trophy for the third time in program history.

2015-16: "Boers at the Buzzer" (Men's Basketball)

On January 15, 2016, third-year guard Taylor Boers helped the Gryphons shock the Windsor Lancers by knocking down a buzzer-beating jumper to give the Gryphons a thrilling 81-80 victory.

Trailing by a single point with 1.5 seconds remaining in regulation, Boers received the inbounds pass from teammate Daniel Dooley and quickly got off a shot that would send the home crowd at the W.F. Mitchell Centre into a frenzy.
