GUELPH, Ont. – Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the Gryphons men's basketball team used a huge fourth quarter push to earn an 87-80 win over the visiting Windsor Lancers (6-15). Guelph, who trailed by as many as 13 early in the third quarter, would rally late, outscoring Windsor 29-17 in the final quarter to take yet another step closer to a postseason berth with three games remaining on the schedule.
Malcolm Glanville and
Rasheed Weekes led the way for the Gryphons, each pouring in 27 points on the night, while third-year forward
Banky Alade (14 points, 14 rebounds) helped the Gryphons out-rebound the Lancers 46-31 on the night.
A sluggish start to the game saw the host Gryphons head into the locker room trailing 42-35. The lone bright spot for the Gryphons in the early going was Malcolm Glanville. The NCAA Division-II transfer, who is in his first season at the University of Guelph, kept his team in it early on with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting in the opening half. Glanville also had 9 rebounds on the night to go along with a team-high 4 assists.
With the game tied at 80-80 and just over two minutes remaining, Glanville would put the Gryphons ahead for good with a deep three-pointer from the right wing to give Guelph and 83-80 lead. Glanville finished the night 4-7 from beyond the arc, while sophomore forward Rasheed Weekes poured in 18 of his career-high 27 points in the second half, including the exclamation mark with a dunk to seal the win with under :20 seconds to go.
What the Gryphons lacked in defensive intensity early on, they made up for with some lockdown defence late, holding Windsor scoreless over the final 2:45 of regulation.
The Gryphons currently sit 5th in the OUA West standings with three games remaining on the regular season schedule. Guelph will be back in action Saturday night on home court versus Waterloo (3-17) before closing things out their regular season schedule versus McMaster (Feb. 13) and Laurier (Feb. 16).
Gryphon Take
"We have to continue to find different ways to win at this time of the year, and tonight we were able to do that. We were flat in the first half, especially defensively, but we grinded in the second half. Malcolm (Glanville) kept us in it and the combo of Bank's (Banky Alade) and Rasheed (Weekes) inside were awesome. Tommy (Yanchus) has been a rock for us all season, and he came through again tonight as well." –
