WINDSOR, Ont. – Sunday afternoon in Windsor, the OUA-leading Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team picked up a 2-1 win over the host Windsor Lancers. With the game tied at 1-1 late in the 3rd period, Gryphons fourth-year forward
Karli Shell secured three points for the Gryphons by finding the back of the net for a fourth consecutive game. The Lively, Ontario native has been one of the hottest players in the OUA in the past month, and now has eight goals on the season, six of which have come in her last six games.
It was a quick turnaround for the No. 7-nationally ranked Gryphons, who on Saturday night were in London locked in an overtime game versus the 2nd-place Western Mustangs. On paper, the Gryphons entered Sunday afternoon's matchup as heavy favourites, with Windsor (0-18-2-2) sitting in last place in the 13-team OUA standings. After a scoreless opening period, the Gryphons would open the scoring midway through the 2nd period on a goal from
Miranda Lantz, her 11th of the season.
The Lancers would answer back in the 3rd period, with Hayley Douglas tying the game at the 9:06 mark, setting the stage for Karli Shell's late winner. With overtime looming and just over two minutes remaining in regulation, Shell would cut in from the left side and finish on the backhand to secure all three points for the visiting Gryphons. The Human Kinetics major now ranks 3rd on the team in scoring (8 goals, 9 assists – 17 points).
The Gryphons have been nearly flawless on the road this season, improving to 9-0-1 away from the Gryphon Centre with Saturday night's overtime loss at Western the only slight blemish on the road record.
Gryphons third-year goalie
Aurore Beaulieu was solid in net for the Gryphons, turning away 32 of the 33 shots sent her way the win. In seven starts this season, the Calgary native and Biological Science major has posted a perfect 7-0 record to go along with a 1.57 goals against average.
