WVB: Gryphons Eliminated from Playoffs Following Road Loss at Windsor

WINDSOR, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's volleyball team made an amazing run to the OUA playoffs last season, winning eight of its last 10 matches to earn a postseason berth. Reigning OUA West Coach of the Year Paul Funk knew his squad would require more consistency throughout the 2018/19 season to make it back to the playoffs. The Gryphons had a difficult time finding it and were eliminated from postseason contention Friday night after a 3-1 road loss to the Windsor Lancers (22-25, 25-12, 16-25, and 15-25).

Guelph went down a set but rebounded well to dominate in the second. Unfortunately, the errors piled up in the third and fourth sets with the Gryphons hitting .056 and .079 respectively and Windsor took advantage of the opportunities to knock Guelph out of the playoff race.

Senior Sophia Herrera had 13 kills, the highest total on both teams, with Michaela Hellinga adding 10. Second-year libero Tara Tanasijevic had a match-high 17 digs to add to her OUA-leading total and setter Alex Curran registered 28 assists. Rookie Cassidy Collins led all players with 5 blocks.

Guelph showed plenty of resolve in the second set after conceding a tight first. The visitors opened quickly with a 3-0 run and the marginonly  grew as Windsor had trouble executing. The Gryphons never trailed in the set and posted 11 kills with just four errors.

That win was the highlight for Guelph as the Lancers jumped out to early leads in both the third and fourth sets before securing the match in comfortable fashion.

The Gryphons close out the season on the road in London in a matchup with the Western Mustangs.

Gryphon Take
"We gave a good effort but as has been the case throughout our second half, we gave up too many points on unforced errors. Sophia had a a strong performance tonight."– Gryphon head coach Paul Funk
