MHKY Recap: Gryphons Battle Back Twice to Earn Single Point in OT Loss to Brock

GUELPH, Ont. - In a similar fashion to their game Thursday night, the Guelph Gryphons found themselves battling all night, but wound up coming up just short in the end. Fighting back from two third period deficits Saturday at the Gryphon Centre, the Gryphs were able to secure a single point before falling 4-3 in overtime to the visiting Brock Badgers.

In the loss, it was Ted Nichol leading the comeback charge for the Gryphons. Trailing 2-1 and 3-2, it was Nichol who found the back of the net both times in the final frame of regulation to knot the game up. However, once overtime came around, it was a Badger's breakaway that would ultimately seal the Gryphon's fate.

In the opening frame, the Gryphons came out flying and with a purpose. Directing much of the early play towards the Brock end, Guelph quickly found themselves on the score board. Not even five minutes into the game, Matt Kenney had the puck wind up on his stick in the slot, and he snapped a shot past Badger's goalie Mario Cavaliere to give the Gryphons a 1-0 advantage. Out-shooting the Badgers 9-2 at one point in the first period, Guelph was able to make their presence felt in a big way.

With the Gryphons leading 1-0 heading into the middle frame, the Badgers began to fight back. After being awarded a power-play near the halfway mark of the second, the visitors were able to get themselves on the board. Using their power-play, Tyler Rollo managed to get the puck past Gryphon's net-minder Andrew Masters tying the game 1-1. That is how the score remained heading into the final period of regulation.

Once the third frame got rolling, the back and forth play truly began. The Badgers took the lead exactly four minutes into the period, but the Gryphons were able to answer. A little over four minutes later, Justin Lemcke found Ted Nichol at the side of the Brock goal and he made no mistake getting the Gryphons back on even terms. However, it was short-lived for Guelph. Only 24 seconds after Nichol's equalizer, the Badgers again retook the lead going up 3-2. With still 11 minutes to play in the contest though, there was tons of time for the game to take another swing, and it did. Only six seconds into a Gryphon power-play opportunity, Nichol pulled them even again, putting home a quick shot from the slot. For the final five minutes of regulation, neither side was able to break the deadlock meaning the Gryphons were off to overtime for the third time this season.

Unfortunately for Guelph, in the extra session Brock's Christian Girhiny found himself on a breakaway and put home the game winner for the Badgers.

"It was a back and forth game tonight," said Gryphon's head coach Shawn Camp. "We had a more disciplined effort, and we were able to battle back again in the third when we fell behind."

"The best part was that we got to overtime and gave ourselves a chance to win. That point is huge for us because it is so tight in our division that every point is absolutely critical. We are pleased with the point, but disappointed we didn't get the second."

In the game, the Gryphons wound up out-shooting the Badgers 36-34.

Now 5-3-3 on the season, the Gryphons will prepare for another battle with the same Brock Badgers team. Guelph will head to St. Catharines on Friday for the second-half of a home and home set with the Badgers.
