WINDSOR, Ont. - Three nights after a close loss to Western, the Guelph Gryphons women's volleyball team were back out on the road in Windsor where they picked up an important road win defeating the Lancers 3-0 on Saturday night. Guelph needed to survive a tough early push out of the gate from Windsor, falling behind 8-4 before rebounding to take the lead late and win 25-23. The Gryphons started much better in the second set jumping out to a 7-1 lead and cruising to a 25-15 win. The third set was by far the Gryphons most impressive of the night as they trailed for much of the set but found a high level after the technical timeout and ran away with the set 25-18 to sweep the match.
Gryphons head coach
Paul Funk said, "Our group played a solid match tonight and were really impressive at the end in raising their game to close out the set. Alex did a great job distributing the ball and we got offense from all of our starters. Jessica Chung had a great run with her serve and defense to help us seize the third set."
In a return to her old stomping grounds, Windsor transfer
Jade Ziebarth was Guelph's top scorer with 12 points (8 kills, 4 aces) followed by a trio of Gryphons including
Jessica Chung (9 kills, 1 ace, 1 block)
Ally Proulx (10 kills, 1 ace) and
Lisa Wedel (9 kills, 2 blocks) with 11 each.
Alex Curran dished out 33 assists on the night and
Tara Tanasijevic contributed 17 digs on defense. Guelph improves to 3-1 on the season and is next in action at home next Friday when they take on U SPORTS No. 2-ranked Ryerson Rams at 6pm.
