TORONTO, Ont. – The 2019 campaign for the Guelph Gryphons men's soccer team has officially come to an end. And they're not coming home empty handed.
Saturday afternoon at York University, host of the 2019 OUA Final Four, the Guelph Gryphons men's soccer team took home bronze medals thanks to a 1-0 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues in the conference's 3rd-place game.
Gryphons third-year forward
Peter Zehdee scored the game's lone goal with a beautiful strike in the 40th minute that left U of T keeper Sebastian Sgarbossa helpless as his right-footed blast made its way just under the crossbar for what would prove to be the bronze medal-clinching goal.
For the Gryphons, who were coming off of a hard fought 1-0 extra time loss the previous night to the eventual OUA champion Carleton Ravens, the bronze medal finish marks the program's first podium result since 2016 when the Gryphons claimed the OUA banner.
The Varsity Blues best chance at equalizing came off a free kick in the 85th minute, but Guelph goalkeeper
Erik Hermanns was up to the task, making a nice diving save to deny U of T and maintain the clean sheet.
