GUELPH, Ont. - As has been the case for most of the season thus far, the Guelph Gryphons once again had their offence ready and rolling. However, on Friday afternoon they took it to a whole new level at the Gryphon Centre. Hosting the Nipissing Lakers on Hockey Day in Gryphonville, Guelph used nine different goal scorers in a 9-4 victory.
Entering the game with the 4th highest goals per game average in the OUA, the Gryphons continued that trend in a big way as their offence proved too much for the Lakers all game long.
Scoring in bunches all throughout the contest, the Gryphons got to work early scoring three times in the first 7:41 of the game. Getting things rolling for the Gryphons was Zach McFadden, who was one of six Gryphons that scored their first goal of the season on Friday, as he stepped into the right circle and snapped a shot past Laker's goalie Brent Moran. A little over a minute later, Justin Lemcke also got his first goal of the season when his point-shot went through everybody and in. Then only 1:12 after, the Gryphons made it 3-0 on a deflection goal by Matt Kenney. Trying to get back into the game, Nipissing was denied by the by glove-hand of Gryphon's goalie Andrew Masters on a penalty shot. The Lakers would get on the board before the first period expired, but the Gryphons would hold a 3-1 lead heading into the break.
After the Lakers trimmed the lead to one early in the second period, the Gryphons took over and quickly put the game out of reach. Guelph went on to score five un-answered goals in a 9:49 span to give themselves an 8-2 advantage. Scoring the goals for the Gryphons were Ryan Da Silva, Zachary Poirier, Mikkel Aagaard, Ryan Obonsawin and Ted Nichol. Although Nipissing would get one back right before the second period expired the Gryphons were sitting pretty with an 8-3 lead after two.
Only 58 seconds into the final frame of regulation, the Gryphons were able to strike again. Scoring his third goal of the season Ryan Valentini snapped home Guelph's final goal of the game. Again the Lakers would get one back, but that would be as close as they got.
In the victory, Andrew Masters recorded 34 saves in the Gryphon's goal.
"The explosive start really helped," said Gryphon's head coach Shawn Camp. "Nipissing is a hard working team that pulled back to make it a tight game again, but once we scored a couple more the flood gates began to open, and we were off and running. It was good to see us have a night where our offence really came to life. It's been due for a while."
"We had a number of guys with their first career goals so that is exciting, and to do it with our alumni here is a lot of fun," Camp said. "We want to show them that we are carrying the torch on their behalf the right way."
Now with a 5-2-2 record, the Gryphons will get set to host the Western Mustangs on Thursday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm from the Gryphon Centre.
