GUELPH, Ont. - With all of the momentum from their win over Queen's in Kingston Friday afternoon, the Guelph Gryphons returned home for their home-opener Saturday night and picked up right where they left off. From start to finish the Gryphons controlled the pace, tempo and most importantly the score board in a 112-59 win over the York Lions.
Scoring at least 25 points in all four quarters, the Gryphons offence kept the pressure on the visitors for the entire 40 minutes. Meanwhile, Guelph had seven players with at least nine points, and six different players in double-digits.
Coming off the bench Saturday night, Hanna Pryce led the way for the Gryphons going 8-13 from the field including 3-7 from deep as she finished the game with a team-high 20 points. Just behind her were a pair of teammates. Both MacKeely Shantz and Burke Bechard tallied 19 points each. Shantz also collected 11 rebounds to pick up a double-double. Reece Mungar and Ashley Wheeler each scored 12 points for the Gyphons, while Ivana Vujadinovic picked up 10 points.
From the early stages, the Gryphons were able to give their fans plenty to cheer about as they came out on fire to begin their home-opener. The Gryphons quickly jumped out to an 11-0 lead to get themselves some early breathing room. Getting the lead has high as 16 points, the Gryphons wound up taking a 29-16 lead into the 2nd-quarter.
The opening quarter served as a clear sign of what was to come the rest of the night, as the Gryphons continued to roll, out-scoring York 25-16 in the 2nd, 33-16 in the 3rd and 25-11 in the 4th.
Throughout the contest the Gryphon's shooters were on fire. The Gryphons shot 59.2 percent from the field, while converting an outstanding 45.8 percent of their threes. On the defensive side of the ball, Guelph shut down the York attack, holding the Lions to a 33.8 field goal percentage.
"I thought for 40 minutes we just kept going and going and going like the Energizer Bunny," said Gryphon's head coach Mark Walton. "We didn't take our foot off the gas during the game. I personally believe, it's all about what we do, and that the score is a byproduct of our work and effort, and that's all it is."
"It was huge to put the pressure on early and not let up," Walton said. "We were able to substitute through all of that and the opposition knows that they are not getting a break because our substitutes can come in and contribute in a really good, positive way. We're going to keep the pressure on teams."
Now off to a 2-0 start to the 2019 regular season, the Gryphons will try and make it 3-0 on Friday when they hit the road. The Gryphons will head down to St. Catharines Friday night for a date with the Brock Badgers. Tip-off is set for 6:00pm.
