KINGSTON, Ont. – The goals have been coming in bunches lately for the Guelph Gryphons women's hockey. On Saturday afternoon in Kingston, the No. 10-ranked Gryphons proved they can get it done in the low-scoring affairs as well.
Captain
Kaitlin Lowy scored the lone goal of the game in a 1-0 road win for the Gryphons over the Queen's Gaels. Fifth-year senior
Valerie Lamenta turned away all 29 shots sent her way for the shutout, helping the Gryphons remain undefeated on the road this season at a perfect 7-0.
At the 16:30 mark of the opening period, the Gryphons were able to convert on a power play chance thanks to a beautiful no-look, cross-ice pass from
Claire Merrick set up Kaitlin Lowy with a one-timer into an open net to put the visiting Gryphons up 1-0. For Lowy, it marked her team-leading 16th goal of the season, putting her just one goal back of the OUA-lead.
It would prove to be the only goal needed for Lamenta, who made some big saves throughout the game, include several in the final moments of regulation as Queen's pressed with the extra attacker on the ice. Saturday's win over the Gaels marked Guelph's fourth straight victory, all of which came on the road. The Gryphons will now return to the Gryphon Centre for a Wednesday night (Jan. 9) matchup with Brock.
Gryphon Take:
"It felt like a playoff game today. Queen's always has strong teams and we tend to have tough games with them, but today was really fast paced, with both teams getting good scoring chances.
We have had the tendency to get off to slow starts this season. Our captains held a players-only meeting recently and really took it upon themselves to try to break that trend. Today, our players came out flying and were extremely focused from the first shift to the last." ~ head coach
