LONDON, Ont. – Friday night at Thompson Arena on the campus of Western University, the Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the host Mustangs.
The Gryphons, playing in their first regular season game since November 30, jumped out to an early lead when third-year winger
Nick Boyer scored his fourth of the season, re-directing home a
Stephen Templeton point shot to put the visiting Gryphons up 1-0 just over two minutes into the opening period.
The U of G lead would be not last long, however, with Western answering back less than two minutes later with a goal from Mitchell Fitzmorris. The Mustangs would take a 2-1 lead later in the period on a power play goal from Ethan Szypula.
Early in the 2nd period, Western's lead would grow to 3-1 on a goal from defenceman Alex Di Carlo. The score would stay that way until late in regulation, where the Mustangs would add an empty netter with :57 seconds remaining after the Gryphons had pulled the goalie for an extra attacker.
Second-year goalie
Andrew Masters (Kitchener, ON) was solid in net for the Gryphons, making 27 saves on the night. Western goalie Luke Peressini was kept busy all night by the Gryphons, but was up for the task, making 37 saves in the win.
The Gryphons will be right back in action again on Saturday night (Jan. 5) with a trip to Toronto to face the OUA West-leading Ryerson Rams.
