WHKY: Gryphons Blank Waterloo 3-0

Merrick, Davison and Mikkelsen Score, While Lamenta Records 30-save Shutout

WATERLOO, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team has been piling up points of late. And the OUA leaders added to their tally in a convincing 3-0 road win over the Waterloo Warriors at the Columbia Ice Fields Saturday night.

Claire Merrick, Sydney Davison and Katie Mikkelsen scored for Guelph, which has won four of its last five games and a point in the lone loss shootout loss during that stretch. Fifth-year goaltender Valerie Lamenta, who entered the night second in the OUA in both goals against average (1.40) and save percentage (.948), stopped all 30 shots she faced for her fourth shutout of the season. The former national player of the year made her best save of the night came early in the third period when she absolutely robbed Dollee Meigs in the slot with the Gryphons up 2-0.

After a good effort in the first period that unfortunately did not produce a goal, Guelph opened the game up in the second. It began with with Karli Shell sending a pass to Merrick, who took a couple swipes at a puck before finally beating Waterloo goalie Amanda Smith at the 5:07 mark. Davison added an unassisted effort just over three minutes later when she unleashed a shot high on Smith's glove side for a quick 2-0 lead.

Mikkelsen would add a goal late in third period. Lawrence was a standout for the team and despite not recording a point, the fourth-year Owen Sound, ON native was outstanding in all three periods

Gryphon Take
"Val was good tonight. She was much more confident and when she plays like that, it gives the rest of the team confidence. The team has really bought in. We hit most of our goals through this four-game segment after the Christmas break." – head coach Rachel Flanagan
