GUELPH, Ont. – Saturday afternoon in St. Catharines, the Gryphons men's soccer team overcame a slow start and scored a pair of goals early in the second half to secure all three points on the road in a 5-2 win over the Brock Badgers. After falling behind 1-0, the Gryphons would respond with goals in the 26' and 40' minutes, respectively, from
Mitchell Lefebvre and
Jace Kotsopoulos. Those two would combine again early in the second half, scoring just one minute apart, to push the Gryphon lead to 4-1 thanks to goals in the 50' and 51' minutes.
Fifth-year defender
Jalen Noronha capped the scoring for the Gryphons, scoring in the 86' minute to punctuate a 5-2 win. The Gryphons have now poured in nine goals over their last two matches after winning 4-0 over Laurier back on Sunday (Sept. 2).
For Kotsopoulos, who last season was named a U SPORTS 2nd team All-Canadian, the season tally now sits at seven goals in five matches, tying him with Ryerson's Abdallah El-Chanti as the country's leading scorer. The Gryphons will look to extend the win streak to three on Sunday afternoon as they return home to face their rivals down highway 6 in the McMaster Marauders.
Gryphon Take
"We had a bit of a slow start. We conceded a lot of possession early in the game and our tying goal was really against the run of play. We were fortunate to have a 2-1 lead at the half, but the opening 20 or 25 minutes of the second half we were much more determined and moved the ball much better. We got a bit sloppy again, giving away a penalty, but it's a good three points considering we underperformed slightly." –
