MSCR: Gryphons Extend Win Streak With 2-0 Victory Over Brock

"Fab Four" Members Zaghloul and Amoo Net the Goals for First-place Guelph

GUELPH, Ont. – They are the hottest men's soccer team in the OUA. The Guelph Gryphons have been manufacturing some impressive performances and the talented side was at it again on their home pitch during Gryphon Soccer Day. Guelph extended its winning streak to seven games with an excellent 2-0 victory over the Brock Badgers.

Youssef Zaghloul and Johnson Amoo scored the goals for the OUA West-leading Gryphons, while Ryan Collins made five saves to earn the clean sheet.

The many Jr Gryphons in the stands had to be impressed with the home side's performance, especially from Guelph's attacking players, which English head coach Keith Mason often refers to as his "Fab Four."

The Gryphons celebrate a goal against Brock
That would be the goal scorers Zaghloul and Amoo, as well as Atchu Siva and the U SPORTS goals leader Jace Kotsopoulos, who has 14 in 10 matches.

Zaghloul, a fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student from Oakville, ON, got the Gryphons off and running early when when he one-timed a strike that put the hosts up 1-0 in the 18th minute. Amoo would double the lead in the 65th after a fantastic effort to steal the ball in the Brock end. The third-year Mississauga, ON native pressed to trouble the Brock backline and then drove a shot right down the middle past Brock keeper Sean Darracott.

The Gryphons were fortunate to keep the clean sheet as the Badgers had two clear-cut chances but defender Conor O'Callaghan cleared the ball off the line in both cases, one in each half, that enabled Guelph to keep the momentum.

Since suffering their only loss of the season in a 3-2 defeat to York, the Gryphons have not lost, outscoring opponents 26-3 in the seven-match stretch.

Turning point
Amoo's goal was a dagger for Brock. The Badgers had a free kick in their own end but Amoo showed an incredible work rate to come up with the ball and finish with style, deflating the hopes of the visitors. Mason said that it's that extra bit of quality from the forward group that can make all the difference in matches and that certainly was the case in Saturday's win.

Gryphon Take
"We always know where each other is and what we are capable of. We just connect so well and that's what makes us good. We have so many points of attack. We have definitely gotten better over the years but I've played with most of these guys during my youth. We've known each other for quite some time and it was a coincidence that we all got together on this team at the same time. We've just jelled." – attacking midfielder Youssef Zaghloul on the cohesiveness of the forward group

"A very solid performance. I was more pleased in the second half. In the first half, we let them have the ball a little too much, didn't press them quite high enough. But second half, we got higher up the field and disrupted them by creating a few turnovers. In those transition moments, we got our second goal. Forced an error and Jonny tucked it away beautifully." – head coach Keith Mason

The Record
Guelph is 8-1-1.
