WRGBY: Gryphons' Attack Erupts in 121-0 Win Over York

Alexandra Everett Leads the Way with Six Tries in One-sided Match

GUELPH, Ont. – All business. That's the best way to describe the Guelph Gryphons women's rugby team after a truly dominant performance in front of their home fans at Varsity Field. The two-time defending OUA champions were a well-oiled machine as they ran over the York Lions 121-0 on a picturesque Homecoming Saturday afternoon.

Nine different Gryphons scored tries, including a match-high six from fourth-year centre Alexandra Everett. The triple-digit point total marked the most points scored by Guelph since a 153-0 demolition of Laurier almost two years ago to the day (Sept. 24, 2016).

Fly half Julia Schell sprints down teh Varsity Field pitch

The Gryphons were coming off a convincing but sloppy 73-0 win over Western last week and the objective against York was to be sharp and expand the attack. The onslaught began in just the second minute when fourth-year fly half Julia Schell touched down for the first of many tries. Everett got her first in the eighth minute, followed by Marissa Themeles a couple minutes later.

Rebecka Sundell got in on the trys in the 14th and then reigning Gryphon Female Athlete of the Week Emmanuela Jada scored two straight (three on the day) to increase the lead to 38-0 in just the 18th minute of play.

York ran at the Gryphons hard but much like the last meeting in the 2017 OUA semi-final, a 55-0 Guelph win, the visitors simply didn't have an answer for the speed and athleticism of the two-time champions.

Gryphon Take
"We're trying to increase our ability to attack anywhere on the field. We want to improve our vision, our opportunities when we're inside their half, so I just want to make sure their rugby knowledge is increasing each game."

"Rugby is a contact game, obviously, but the objective is not to get hit and I think we lose sight of that sometimes. These girls are working on little tools to make the game more exciting and fun to play, and absolutely everything worked well today. The girls were just hungry to get across the line." – head coach Colette McAuley

The Record
Guelph is 3-0.
