MSCR: Gryphons Seize Control Early in 4-0 Defeat of Algoma

Kotsopoulos Hits Another Milestone with His 50th Goal

GUELPH, Ont. – The points are beginning to pile up for the Guelph Gryphons men's soccer team. Guelph was sharp in its latest effort, a 4-0 win over the Algoma Thunderbirds at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Saturday afternoon.

Youssef Zaghloul, Johnson Amoo, and Evan Dick each found the back of the net, while Gryphon hitman Jace Kotsopoulos scored another milestone goal to go along with two assists.

Zaghloul got the Gryphons off and running when he took a nice through ball from Kotsopoulous and coolly finished over Algoma keeper Kevin Picard in just the third minute of play. Amoo scored less than a minute later, depositing a low, hard cross from Kotsopoulous, who seemed to be relishing his role as provider.

But the fourth-year Burlington, ON native would eventually score one himself, netting the 50th of his Gryphon career in fine fashion. Kotsopoulous, who scored two braces last weekend to establish the all-time U of G men's scoring record of 49, had some magic left in him this week. He took the ball at the top of the box, turned one way and then the other to shed an Algoma defender, before drilling a low, left-footed strike into the left corner.

Dick came on as a substitute and added his first of the season in the 75th minute. Guelph has won four straight after its lone loss at York, outscoring opponents 11-2 in that stretch.

Turning point
Zaghloul immediately put the Thunderbirds on the back foot with his early tally. When Amoo made it 2-0 less than a minute later, the result, and three points, seemed sewn up.

Gryphon Take
"It was nice to get this win. We got some players minutes and were able to give some our guys on yellows, or those dealing with injuries, rest. It's really fantastic for us to see some of our players contribute like they did. There's a lot of value in that for the long term." – head coach Keith Mason

The Record
Guelph is 5-1-1.
