MBB: Warriors Pull Away in 4th Quarter, Hand Gryphons 87-76 Loss

WATERLOO, Ont. – Friday night at the University of Waterloo, the Gryphons men's basketball team suffered a 87-76 loss to the Waterloo Warriors. The two teams were separated by just one point after three quarters of play (61-60 Waterloo), but the Warriors began the final quarter on a 13-4 run en route to the 11-point victory. Warriors 6-foot-5 second year forward Nedim Hodzic (Waterloo, ON) finished the night with 31 points and 16 rebounds while fifth year guard Jonathan Wallace led the Gryphons (5-16) with 18 points.

Aside from the big night from Hodzic, the Warriors also received a spark off the bench from second year guard Justin Malnerich who was 4-7 from beyond the arc, including some deep 3's in the 4th quarter to help the Warriors pull away.

The Gryphons had three players score in double figures, with senior guard Taylor Boers chipping in with 13 points on an efficient 5-8 shooting. Daniel Dooley had 10 points to go with 4 assists. The Gryphons were able to win the turnover battle, committing just 4 themselves while forcing Waterloo into 12. In the end, the Warriors' one-two punch of Nedim Hodzic (31 points) and Simon Petrov (20 points) would prove to be the difference as Waterloo (8-14) was able to snap their five-game losing streak.

The Gryphons have three games remaining in their regular season schedule and will be back in action on Sunday, February 11 when they travel back to Waterloo, this time for a matchup with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (9-12). The game tips at 2pm and will be played at Manulife Sportsplex at RIM Park, as Laurier's home gym is currently undergoing repairs after damage caused by a leak in the roof.
