GUELPH, Ont. – Seeing visiting teams leave the Gryphon Centre with a win has become a rare feat in recent years in OUA men's hockey. But on Saturday night, the Ryerson Rams narrowly escaped with two points. The Rams edged the Gryphons 5-4 in a high-scoring affair on Saturday night at the Gryphon Centre in a matchup between the top two teams in the OUA West division.
Seven of the nine goals in the game came in a wild 2nd period, where Ryerson scored four times with Guelph striking on three occasions. Trailing 5-3 heading to the final period, the Gryphons, who one night earlier clinched first-place in the OUA West, would continue to fight their way back into the game with
Marc Stevens scoring midway through the 3rd to trim the deficit to one. Marc Stevens was one of three Gryphon players to register three-point nights, with
J.P. Villeneuve and
Manny Gialedakis each finishing the night with 1 goal and 2 assists.
The Gryphons outshot the Rams 46-21 on the night and will not have to wait long to get another shot at Ryerson, with the two teams scheduled to meet up on Feb. 9 in Toronto in the regular season finale.
The No. 6-ranked Gryphons (19-6-1) will next be in action on Thursday, Feb. 8 in what will be the Gryphons' final home game of their regular season schedule. The Gryphs will enter the OUA playoffs as the top-seed in their division, with the opening round set to get underway Thursday, Feb. 15.
