MHKY: Gryphons Go Down 5-3 on Road at Brock

Guelph Scores Three Straight but Can't Hang on to Lead

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – There's never a shortage of excitement when the Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team hooks up with the rival Brock Badgers. The two foes put on another show Friday night in St. Catharines though the Gryphons eventually fell 5-3 to the defending OUA-champion Badgers at the Seymour Hannah Centre.

Marc Stevens, Stephen Templeton, and Chris Brill-Morgan scored for the Gryphons, while goalie Evan Cormier was busy all night in making 34 saves.

Guelph trailed 4-3 and had a good flurry late before pulling Cormier for an extra attacker but the visitors were unable to get an equalizer. Brody Silk got control of the puck in the dying seconds an added an empty-netter to secure the win and snap the Gryphons' three-game win streak.

Guelph was in danger of being blown out when the Badgers built a 2-0 lead in the opening period. But the Gryphons showed resilience and exploded for three straight goals, starting with Stevens, just 16 seconds after Connor Brown notched Brock's second. Templeton tied it 2-2 late in the first and Brill-Morgan gave the visitors their first lead at the 3:05 mark of the second.

But the Badgers regained control of the game starting with an Adam Lloyd equalizer before Connor Walters scored on a power play to put the hosts up for good at 11:25 of the second period..

The Gryphons have an exhibition game later in December when they travel to Oxford, OH to take on the NCAA's Miami University (Ohio) Redhawks before resuming the OUA schedule in the new year against Western on Jan. 4.

Gryphon Take
"There's a reason Brock are the defending champs – they work the same way all the time. We played in waves, real good for parts of the game but not good enough on the whole. And a late push wasn't enough." – head coach Shawn Camp

The Record
Guelph is 6-8-0-2.
