WHKY: Gryphons Score Three Power Play Goals in 6-1 Road Win Over Brock

Captain Kaitlin Lowy Leads the Way with Four-Point Night (3 G, 1 A)

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Christmas break is always more enjoyable when a team can head into the holidays on a winning note. The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team made sure to do just that thanks to a convincing 6-1 road win over the Brock Badgers Thursday night in St. Catharines. The Gryphons dominated on special teams, scoring three times on the power play while also adding a shorthanded goal to remain undefeated on the road this season (4-0). Gryphon captain Kaitlin Lowy led the way with a four-point night (3 goals, 1 assist) while Katie Mikkelsen, Kristen Jay and Miranda Lantz accounted for the other U of G goals.

After a scoreless opening period, the Gryphons took control of the game with three power play goals in the opening six minutes of the 2nd period. Lowy's first of three on the night came just :25 seconds into the 2nd period, with the captain then assisting on Mikkelsen's power play maker at 4:20 which pushed the lead to 2-0.

At 6:18 of the 2nd, the Gryphons would strike yet again on the power play, with Lowy scoring her 2nd of the night to put the visiting Gryphs in command up 3-0. It would stay that way until late in the 3rd period when a pair of empty netters from Jay and Lowy would seal the win, followed by a shorthanded tally from Lantz to cap the scoring. Lowy now sits one off the OUA-lead in both goals (9) and points (15).

Aurore Beaulieu turned away 23 of the 24 shots her way for her third win of the season in as many starts.

Gryphon Take:
"It was a pretty even game five-on-five, but special teams was the difference. 60% on the power play and 100% on penalty kill is a credit to our group who prepared well and made the necessary adjustments for Brock's special teams this week. Aurore made some outstanding saves to earn the victory." ~ head coach Rachel Flanagan

The Record
Guelph is 8-2-0-1 (wins-losses-OT wins-OT losses)
