GUELPH, Ont. – Sunday afternoon on their home court, the Guelph Gryphons women's basketball team suffered a 67-59 loss to the Laurentian Voyageurs (2-4). The Gryphons outscored Laurentian 19-9 in the 3rd quarter and took an eight-point lead into the final quarter, only to see the Voyageurs explode for 27 points, outscoring the Gryphons 27-11 to leave Guelph with an eight-point victory. Laurentian knocked down nine three-pointers on the day, five of which came in the final quarter.
Voyageurs' fourth-year guard Andrea Zulich (Sudbury, ON) struggled from the field throughout the day, but made her only three baskets (all three-pointers) in the 4th quarter. After the Gryphons battled back to make it a two-point game thanks to a Julia Kokonis bucket, Laurentian answered back with a big three-pointer from fourth-year guard Mackenzie Robinson (Collingwood, ON) who connected from beyond with just over a minute remaining to restore a two-possession lead for the Voyageurs at 62-57.
The Gryphons received yet another strong performance from sophomore guard
Burke Bechard (Dover Centre, ON) who scored a team-high 18 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Veteran forward
Julia Kokonis provided a nice spark off of the U of G bench, pouring in 15 points and 7 rebounds. The Gryphons out-rebounded the Voyageurs 42-36 and were plus-two in the turnover battle, but cold shooting hurt the Gryphons in the end, with the team shooting a season-low 26.5% from the field as a team while going 0-for-10 from beyond the arc. Laurentian meanwhile connected on 9 three-pointers on the day.
The Gryphons put themselves in good position to win the game after an impressive 3rd quarter in which they started on a 10-1 run. Helping lead the way was third-year guard
Hanna Pryce (Aurora, ON) who scored all six of her points early in the quarter to put the Gryphons in front heading to the final quarter. Sunday's loss to Laurentian marks the Gryphons' first loss on homecourt this season after having picked up wins over Nipissing (Nov. 16) and Western (Oct. 24) in their previous two home matchups.
Gryphon Take
"We didn't' defend well in the 4th quarter and struggled at the offensive end as well. Compound that with some unforced errors and it's a recipe for disaster." –
Gryphons head coach Mark Walton
