GUELPH, Ont. – Sunday afternoon at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the Gryphons men's volleyball team fell in straight sets to the No. 8-ranked Windsor Lancers. Set scores were 25-20, 28-26 & 25-21.
A season ago, these two teams required five sets in each of their regular season matchups, with both teams winning on the road. Sunday's matchup once again resulted in some highly competitive, entertaining volleyball, highlighted by a thrilling 2nd set (ultimately taken 28-26 by the Lancers). The Gryphons lost their 6-7 middle blocker
Sam Nothnagel due to a lower body injury during that set, a significant loss for the Gryphs with the Melbourne, Australia native leading the team in blocks on the season.
Zach Newman and
Zarko Ubiparip each finished with 11 points to lead the Gryphons in attack, with Ubiparip also adding a team-high 12 digs. The Gryphons will now play each of their next four games on the road, beginning with a trip to St. Catharines to face Brock on November 23.
Gryphon Take
"It was a tough loss versus a very good and disciplined Windsor team. Losing Sam (Nothnagel) in that 2nd set really hurt us, even though Nazyr (Francis) did a nice job filling in. We need to do a better job putting the ball away when we have the opportunity." –
head coach Cal Wigston
