GUELPH, Ont. - After a tight opening half of play on Wednesday night at Varsity Field, the Gryphon field hockey team would explode for six second-half goals to run away from the Western Mustangs in a 7-0 win.
Fourth-year forward Olivia Finch opened the scoring in 33rd minute, with Kayla Magarelli and Danielle Crumpton picking up assists.
Six different players would score for the Gryphons on the day, with Crumpton the lone player to score twice.Â
Captain Rudi Ballard, who plays in the back line, got into the action on the offensive end, scoring on a reverse tomahawk shot into the upper mesh in the 47th minute to push the U of G lead to 5-0.Â
Amanda Hodgert and Maryam Maamoun combined for the shutout in the Gryphon net in what was the first of back-to-back meetings between the Gryphons and Mustangs. The two teams will square off again on October 13 in Toronto.
