WHKY: Gryphons Start Fast in 4-0 Win Over York

Guelph Scores Three in the Opening Period as Lantz, Melo and Davison All Get Goals

TORONTO, Ont. –  It's been a good week for the Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team. The Gryphons have been trending up over the last seven days and they got out of the gates fast Wednesday night at Canlan Ice Sports in Toronto. Guelph extended its win streak to three games after erupting for three first-period goals to defeat the York Lions 4-0.

Miranda Lantz had two goals, while rookie Madison Melo and Sydney Davison also scored for the Gryphons, winners in four of their first five games. Fifth-year goaltender Valerie Lamenta got the start in net and stopped all 27 shots she faced for her first shutout, and third win, of the season. The Montreal, QC came up with her best work of the night midway through the third period when she made an unreal stop with her right pad off a rebound to preserve the shutout.

The Gryphons had a dominant first period, going up 3-0 in a hurry to essentially secure the game. Melo had shown some flashes of her scoring ability in the preseason and she registered her first OUA goal on a fantastic individual effort. The rookie from London, ON took control of the puck in her own zone and then steamed up the left wing and wired a shot from the left circle past York netminder Lauren Dubie just 2:54 into the game.

Lantz extended the lead to 2-0 when she got to the right circle and deposited a great feed from Ashlee Lawrence, who set up her teammate from behind the net. And the visitors added another at the 11:27 mark when Davison tracked down a puck on the right boards, deked a defender, and then tucked a backhander through Dubie's five-hole.

The Lions grew a little frustrated down 3-0 and the game got chippy but the Gryphons maintained their composure. Lantz added Guelph's fourth late in the game to close out the scoring.

Gryphon Take
"We feel like there's been some improvement since game one. Our rookies are starting to get comfortable with our systems and we're getting scoring down the lineup. It was a rough game after the first but the girls continued to play hard and bounce back after some hard hits." – head coach Rachel Flanagan

The Record
Guelph is 3-1-1-0.
