ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's basketball team has several different faces on the roster this season. And it will take a while for new-look squad to jell.
That was evident in a road game in St. Catharines Saturday night as the Gryphons lost 102-85 to the Brock Badgers at the Bob Davis Gym.
Guelph simply had trouble making shots, especially in a first half that ended with the team down 54-33. But the Gryphons did show plenty of grit in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Badgers 30-24 as the hosts looked to run it up with a barrage of three-point attempts.
First-year Gryphon
Malcolm Glanville led the team with 24 points, including a sensational performance from the free-throw line, where he knocked down 14 of 18 attempts. The Toronto, ON native also added 6 boards, equaling third-year guard
J.L. Nwosu for the second-highest total on Guelph, behind T
Tommy Yanchus's 7. Yanchus also chipped in 15 points.
The second quarter ultimately decided the game for the Gryphons. They trailed by just one point at 23-22 after the first were and in good shape up 28-27 with 8:10 to go in the second. But the Badgers went on a devastating 27-5 run to blow the game wide open. Brock poured in 30 the quarter, while the visitors scored just 11. The Gryphons seemed to have a lid on the basket and ended up shooting just 30.8 per cent from the field in the first half with three assists.
They were much better in the second half, hitting 15 of 36 from the floor, including 3 of 10 from long range.
