Box Score WINDSOR, Ont. – As far as a title defence goes, the Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team couldn't have done much more. The Gryphons captured the first OUA championship in program history one year ago and they proved the hunger was still there in 2018. Guelph capped off an excellent regular season with a 5-0 road win against the Windsor Lancers Sunday afternoon.
Danielle Sauve,
Victoria Hinchliffe,
Julie Karn,
Alana MacLean, and
Mia Cadieux all scored for Guelph, which finished the year 12-1-3. The defending champions earned a first-round bye in the OUA playoffs and will get back on the pitch when they host a quarter-final at the Gryphon Soccer Complex next Sunday at 1 pm.
The season finale was decided relatively early on as Sauve, a third-year midfielder from Waterloo, scored in the sixth minute to get Guelph out of the gate quickly. Hinchliffe added a goal in the eighth minute, her 12
th of the season. The third-year striker finished third in U SPORTS goal scoring, behind only Jenny Wolever (13) of Queen's and McMaster's Stephanie Roberts (14).
Up 2-0 to start the second half, Guelph continued to push and Karn, a fourth-year midfielder, would extend the lead in the 54
th minute. Second-year midfielders Alana and Mia rounded out the scoring. The goals from that trio were all the first of their OUA careers.
Brooke Davidson earned the clean sheet in the Gryphon net. Guelph allowed an incredible three goals all season, with first-choice keeper
Libby Brenneman playing 720 minutes over eight appearances without conceding.
The 12 regular-season wins was the most ever recorded by a Gryphon women's side in program history, eclipsing the previous mark of 10 established last year.
Gryphon Take
"It was important to keep our defensive record. And we wanted to continue to do the things we committed to all year as a group. To see some really good performances, some players who have been working hard all year, was nice. When you can score five and maintain your concentration defensively, that's good."
"What I'm really proud of is that they worked as a group. Today exemplified that. They not only bought in, they helped to develop the foundations of the program. They've been really good at committing themselves to be the best they can be on and off the field. It's a privilege to be around them." –
