LONDON, Ont. – Wednesday night at Alumni Hall on the campus of Western University, the Gryphons men's basketball team suffered a 99-80 road loss to the Western Mustangs. The Gryphons were unable to contain some hot shooting from the Mustangs who finished the night 16-33 from beyond the arc. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 3-12 on the season while Western improves to 9-6. A trio of Western players (Eriq Jenkins, Marko Kovac & Omar Shiddo) led the way for the sharp shooting Mustangs, with the trio accounting for 12 of Western's 16 three pointers. Tommy Yanchus came off the bench to score 15 points.
With 4:48 remaining in the 2nd quarter, the Gryphons were trailing by just two points after a lay in from Kieran Naus made it a 36-34 game. Western would then start to catch fire, ending the half on a 17-3 run to take a commanding 53-37 lead into the locker room at the half. The host Mustangs would carry that momentum into the 3rd quarter where they would pour in another 31 points to put the game out of reach heading to the 4th where Guelph would outscore Western 26-15.
The Gryphons (3-12) will now prepare to face the No. 2-ranked team in the country in the Brock Badgers. Brock will visit the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre for a Friday night matchup with the Gryphons. The two teams will then square off again on Wednesday, Jan. 24 in St. Catharines. The Badgers currently sit in 1st in the OUA West division with a 12-2 record, with their only losses coming to the Carleton Ravens and Ottawa Gee-Gees.
