GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons men's soccer team has had to score goals in bunches to keep their unbeaten start to the season going. On Friday night in their home opener, they only needed one.
Johnson Amoo scored quickly in the fifth minute, lifting the Gryphons to a 1-0 win over the Brock Badgers at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
It was a huge three points for Guelph (4-0-1). They sit atop the OUA West with 13 points, the most of any team in the conference.
Amoo's goal just minutes into the game was all Guelph would need. But the Gryphons were a little unlucky not to add to their total. They fired eight shot attempts at Badgers' goalkeeper Matthew Haggith, with five hitting the target. Guelph also had 11 corners on the evening, seven of them coming in the scoreless second half.
Rookie goalkeeper
Erik Hermanns made three saves to keep Guelph's first clean sheet of the OUA season.
The Gryphons head to Hamilton Sunday for an away match against the McMaster Marauders. Action begins at 3:15 pm.
