WSCR: Gryphons Win 2-0 Over York

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team is a side that prides itself on playing positive soccer. The Gryphons' passing and creativity was on full display Wednesday afternoon as they put together a thorough performance in beating the York Lions 2-0 on School Day at the Gryphon Soccer complex.

Guelph's players were efficient and rarely made mistakes against the Lions, a team the Gryphons defeated 1-0 in Toronto back on Aug. 30. And the goals from rookie
Sydney Johnson and second-year striker Victoria Hinchliffe were an example of Guelph's forward-thinking approach.

"It was a very tidy performance," said Gryphons' coach Shayne Campbell. "We really controlled the game in the first half. The girls had a lot of possession and were creative.

"We've been working really hard on passing the ball. Both goals were well taken and well constructed."

Guelph took a deserved 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when Johnson, a first-year player and Guelph native, slotted a low ball past York goalkeeper Taylor Grant after receiving a perfect through ball from second-year midfielder
Victoria Gunnarson.

"That was literally the nicest pass I've ever received," the rookie said of the link up play with her teammate, which produced her second goal of the season.

The space that Guelph enjoyed in the first half closed in the second 45 minutes as York looked hard for an equalizer. But the visitors had trouble breaking down a smart, physical Guelph back line and when York did a get a shot off, goalkeeper
Libby Brenneman took care of them. Brenneman made just two saves in earning the clean sheet but she was a presence commanding the back end.

Hinchliffe's goal in the 71st minute would put the game away, an incredible team effort that began with
Kaylin Twardowski's hard work in the midfield. She got the ball to Megan Sullivan, who passed to Alana MacLean. The rookie midfielder, who terrorized the Lions on the left flank all game, sent a great ball into Hinchliffe and last year's OUA Rookie of the Year made no mistake, lifting the ball over the keeper for the 2-0 lead.

It was Hinchliffe's first of the season and she was noticeably relieved after seeing the ball finally hit the back of the net.

"We played really well," said Johnson. "We connected on most of our passes, which was a focus for us.

"We're into the second half of the season now and we want to keep building."

The Gryphons are back at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Sunday, Sept. 24 against the Waterloo Warriors. Match time is 1 pm.
