Gryphons welcome Campbell to lead Women’s Soccer

GUELPH, Ont. (April 4, 2017) -- Former University of Guelph standout soccer player Shayne Campbell has been named head coach of the Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team as announced by Gryphon Athletics Tuesday.

A former player with significant ties to the Guelph soccer community and an extensive playing and coaching resume, Campbell assumes the position immediately, following the retirement of Randy Ragan and will lead the Gryphons into the 2017 schedule.

"We are proud and excited to announce Shayne as our next head coach," Director of Athletics, Scott McRoberts said. "He brings a wealth of experience to the program, and we are looking forward to him leading us in the future.

I would also like to extend a special thank you to Randy Ragan for his last eight years with the program. We have been very fortunate to have his passion and leadership at the helm of the women's soccer program, he's always been an advocate for what being a student-athlete means, both on and off the field."

Prior to this appointment Campbell has been an assistant coach with the Women's team at Guelph for the past five seasons. He holds a CSA National A License, the USSF National B license and the CSCS from the NSCA. He is a former Guelph Gryphons men's soccer student-athlete (1992-1994) and team captain having earned three OUA All-Star nominations and was the recipient of the Department of Athletics Don Cameron award in 1994.

Campbell played professionally in several places across North America before returning home to Guelph to work in youth development at several local clubs. His community initiatives have seen him awarded a Paul Harris fellow award from Rotary and he was an inaugural recipient of Guelph's 40 under 40.

"I would like to thank the University for this opportunity. Randy has built so much here and as a Gryphon alumni and former varsity player, I feel very privileged to continue the work he has started. I am ready to work as hard as I can to support our players both on and off the field to achieve success," commented Campbell.

The Gryphons women's soccer program has been a consistent contender in the OUA under Ragan's leadership, progressing to the OUA West semi-finals the past four seasons. Last year, the Gryphons were ranked among the top defensive programs in the country.

Seeking a stable and continuous program, Campbell has solidified the programs assistant coaching staff for 2017 in Alfons Weersink and Onkar Dhillon.

"In Alfons we retain someone who is uniquely positioned as a faculty member to help ensure the student-athlete experience is supported. Alfons helps to connect our current and prospective student-athletes with academic guidance.

Onkar Dhillon has a history of coaching youth players and helping them get to the next level be that University or high performance environments. He has a good eye for talent and finding players that fit within the paradigms of our team culture and ethos."
