WVB: Gryphons Seasons Ends with Loss to Ryerson in OUA Quarter-finals

TORONTO, ON - It certainly wasn't an easy win for the No. 2-seeded Ryerson Rams, but in the end they were just a little bit better than the Guelph Gryphons.

On Saturday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, the Rams swept the Gryphons out of the OUA women's volleyball playoffs with a 3-0 Quarter-final victory. Set scores were 25-23, 26-24 & 25-20.

The first set started with Ryerson on fire, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead, but Guelph chipped away and evened the set at 11 apiece. After leading 16-14 at the technical timeout, the Rams went on a 5-2 run to take a 21-16 lead, only to have the Gryphons storm back with a 6-0 run of their own to briefly take the lead late. The teams exchanged points and then a controversial touch call on set point gave Ryerson the first set 25-23. Set 2 was a back and forth battle early on but Guelph managed to forge ahead 16-12 at the timeout. Ryerson would chip away at the lead later tying it at 19-19 and again, from there, the teams would trade points. Down the stretch, Ryerson's defence was the difference as several spectacular digs in the later rallies allowed them to take the set 26-24. The Gryphons refused to fold in the third set as both teams battled back and forth with neither side able to forge a significant lead. Ryerson led 16-15 at the timeout and forged a small lead at 19-17. After Guelph's final timeout, Ryerson was again able to frustrate the Gryphons offence with stellar defence eventually breaking through to win the set and match at 25-20.

Gryphons head coach Paul Funk said, "We played well today but couldn't quite match Ryerson's level. Their libero (Julie Longman) was the player of the match in my opinion. They played really well defensively and frustrated us with their digging. I was happy with the way we composed ourselves during the match and we certainly forced them to play at a high level in order to beat us today." Victoria Golebiowski led the Guelph offence with 13 points (11 kills, 2 aces) while Kayla McMullen had 12 digs on defence.
