NORTH BAY, ON - A slow start on Friday night in North Bay didn't just hurt the Gryphons...it cost them the game. The Gryphons found themselves trailing 22-5 after the opening quarter of play against the Lakers in OUA men's basketball action Friday night at Nipissing University. Guelph would outscore their opponent 64-57 over the final three quarters, including 29-14 in the 4th, but it wasn't enough as Nipissing held on for a 79-69 victory. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 4-11 on the season while Nipissing improves to 8-8.
Fourth year guard
Taylor Boers led the Gryphons in scoring with 18 points in 23 minutes of floor time off the bench.
Drew Walford was the only other Gryphon to score in double figures, finishing with 11 points, as the Gryphs shot a season-low 27.1% from the field as a team (23-85). Nipissing meanwhile shot 46.5% from the field and out-rebounded the Gryphons 50-39.
Friday night's game marked the first of a two-game, northern Ontario road trip as the Gryphs will be right back in action again on Saturday night when they travel to Sudbury to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs. Laurentian is 7-9 on the season but are currently riding a three-game win streak. The Gryphons have four games remaining on their regular season schedule as they continue to battle for a spot in the OUA playoffs. Following Saturday night's game in Sudbury, the Gryphs will play each of their final three regular season games at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, beginning with a huge back-to-back matchup with Lakehead on February 10 & 11.
